History of the organization

The History of the Children’s Aid Society dates back to the year 1853 (Children Aid Society, 2015). Charles Loring Brace together with a group of social reformers pioneered the Organization. During its time of inception, Orphan asylums and almshouses were the only avenues for the provision of social services to the poor and the homeless children (Children Aid Society, 2015). The founder’s theory of fashioning an organization that would be devoted to help poor children was radical; Brace progressive ideas were turned to become far reaching activities and reforms for the poor and the homeless children; working men; needy families as well as the disabled boys and girls. Brace was educated to be a minister; he was determined to give children an alternative to life in the squalid slums and the teeming New York City streets (Children Aid Society, 2015). Between the year 1853 and 1929, many abandoned, abused and orphaned children were rescued from the streets of New York, they were taken by train to live with families across the country; the main emphasis was; giving the needy children a family life.

Aims and goals

The mission of the Children’s Aid Society is to help youngsters who live in penury to strive and thrive. The Society is able to accomplish this by providing comprehensive support for children together with their families in the targeted high needs, New York City neighborhoods (Mastin, Metzger & Golden, 2013). The conglomerate assists New York’s necessitous children in the five districts of New York. The cardinal goal of the organization is to reconnect young people to positive institutions, for example, schools, work, relationships with caring parents and community based support centers and to divert them from the negative influences and institutions (Mastin, Metzger & Golden, 2013).

Major programs and Initiatives

a.      Adopting children and providing them with foster care

         The society is responsible for finding suitable homes for five hundred young ones every year. The different set agenda enhances services within the consortium, for example, the provision of foster care as well as services for the teens (Children’s Aid Society, 2015).

b.      Provision of after school as well as enrichment programs

        The Children’s Aid Society has a common belief that the process of learning does not stop at 3 p.m. For this reason, the after schools, weekend as well as holiday programs are at the heart of the organization (Children’s Aid Society, 2015). Health services are made in a way that meet the different needs of children as well as adolescents who are in community schools, community centers and foster care (Children’s Aid Society, 2015).

f.       Development of the youths

              The welfare association assists in the establishment of a growth manifesto for teens. They are given experiences that encourage them to engage in initiatives and to grow holistically (Children’s Aid Society, 2015).

Personal thoughts on the works of the organization

I believe that the Children’s Aid Society of New York is doing an incredible job of serving all the needy children (Fusco, 2012). The center has been able to assist many different youths to form relationships with caring adults and peers. Despite the success of the organization in making children to become responsible adults, there are major gaps that need to be addressed, especially when it comes to the transition from teen to an independent adult (Mastin, Metzger & Golden, 2013). It is significant to note that with the financial and emotional support from the family, youths can make it. However, a significant number of them do not, which makes them to become disconnected. Youths who age out of foster care have a very hard time getting on their feet and without a family to rely on the odds of succeeding become minimal (Fusco, 2012). Different methods can be utilized to decrease the negative impacts linked with transitioning.

Recommendations on how the organization can improve

  1. Address the children’s social, emotional health as a core element of the child welfare practice

Currently, the Children’s Aid Society of New York focuses on safety and permanency, but this is not enough to assure the best outcomes of the children who are in the foster care system. Many children in foster care have experienced trauma; they are likely to show symptoms of mental illness (Fusco, 2012). The organization can help to ameliorate this problem by coming up with treatment needs earlier on. It will be important for the organization to establish a managed care plan for the children who have these experiences (Fusco, 2012).

  • Provide career development and employment opportunities for the youth aged 14 and above

The youth in foster care should have opportunities to identify and connect their academic strengths and interests to the world of work and to understand the educational requirements that are necessary for getting the jobs that they require as adults (Fusco, 2012). Youths need to have part time as well as summer jobs that can assist them to acquire relevant skills and discover areas of interests (Mastin, Metzger & Golden, 2013). It is important to give them coaching as well as mentoring in order to enhance the implemented efforts. The older youths in foster care should be provided with career development and employment opportunities, for example, they should receive a presumptive eligibility for the summer youth employment programs (Fusco, 2012).

  • Support the youth aging out of foster care with financial assets

The youths who age out may struggle because they lack the modest financial resources to get started in life, to be able to have housing, education, transportation and other necessities. It is important for the organization to ensure that they provide these youths with the necessary resources for transitioning in life (Fusco, 2012). An asset account should be created by these homes for all the youths who age out.
