Spontaneous Order
What is spontaneous order?
Spontaneous order can be described as unplanned occurrence of order out of possible issues. It is a process that occurs physically, biologically and via social networks. In economic works, this order is known as self-organization and it defines growth of different kinds of social orders when various individuals come together and do not have an interest of planning an order.
In modern day, there are many things that have occurred as a result of self-organization and they include evolution on earth, crystal structure, the internet, language and a free market economy. These systems have emerged spontaneously over the past years.
At this point, it is worth noting that the orders can be clearly differentiated from organizations. This is based on the fact that they are scale free networks but organizations are hierarchical in nature. What’s more, organizations are part of social impulsive orders and not vice versa. This can be largely attributed to the fact that an organization’s environment is often seen as an emergent behavior while self-organization is an instance.
Applications of spontaneous orders according to Fredrick Hayek
Fredrick Hayek is one of the most popular theorists that have developed self-organization based on his most famous idea. He strongly argues that the society is bound by rules and the rules have their own order thus increasing complexity in the manner in which man cannot easily understand. According to the theorist, many things occur spontaneously and the order has is evident in many spheres of modern day society including
Language
Hayek claims that there is no person or group that thought language occurred spontaneously. Language has continued to evolve over the past years as mankind advances despite the fact that it has its own grammar rules. Therefore, language can be described as complete in detail even if laptops or a computer could be utilized for this purpose.
Politics
The theory is quite common in political arena. The recent fall of the Soviet Union is a common example of the order and in his book, The Road to Serfdom; Hayek foreshadowed what people see and read on daily basis. Therefore, there is no political system that could totally assume as fascism and communism did on the right and the left respectively. As a result, tyranny results from the state often attempt to plan daily works of life.
Economics
In economics world, Hayek states that the theory is even more striking. The role of state economic planning often comes into question whether federal funding is directed towards taxes or highways to impact investment decisions. It is basically a free market and it can generate various signals to all trade stakeholders.
Any effort by the state to impose interstate or intrastate tariffs, regulate prices or impose quality standards sends inaccurate messages and conflicting ideas that affect the market. This is therefore equally applicable in Soviet Union society that desired total planning.
Lastly, Fredrick argues that institutions that are centrally directed do not have the resources to keep abreast with all important economic conditions at a specific time and place to fully understand received information. It means that many policymakers across the globe may not necessarily understand all information at hand when making decisions. They can easily base their understanding on old data that is no longer applicable in modern day society. It is only in free market economies spontaneously created by valuations of many people that would ensure successful economic vitality.
Recent developments of self-organization
Friedrich Hayek is one of the most popular theorists that have defended the theory of spontaneous order. The theorist argues that the brain, common law and science among many other things are types of self-organization theory. This was further developed by Thomas McQuade and Bill Butos in a wide range of papers. According to Gus Dizerega, democracy is a good example of self-organization in the government. Religion in many countries such as the United States of America is as a result of the theory. Other examples that have been cited include artistic and literary productions as well as cities.
However, the Legacy of Fredrick Hayek of the spontaneous order just like his own theory will continue to evolve.
