Rawls view on liberty and equality

Democracy has been a key solution into fighting economic and social inequality. Liberal democracy allows political participation rights to the people of low social class and makes them universal. Its objective is to ensure liberty and freedom of economic activity. Even with so many revisions and principles to enforce liberty, there remains economic inequality due to already accumulated and monopolized capital. It, therefore, becomes a conflict between economic inequality and political equality. Liberation has continuously been adhering to logic and unable to reform and correct its limits. This conflict is brought about by differences in the economic and social interests, views on institutional theories and the perceived consequences of political polices. John Rawls came in with his contribution in an attempt to settle the conflict between equality and liberty in the tradition of democratic thought.

Rawls account has been addressing how unity can be achieved within the diversified view on political power and democracy. Rawl uses four roles in the citizen’s public life to explain his view on political philosophy. First, people set ways to bring harmony and acceptance in the society on issues that bring divide. Second, citizens should be helped to understand themselves in their socials world. The third role is the reconciliation: “to calm our frustrations and rage against our society and its history by showing us the way in which its institutions…are rational and developed over time as they did to attain their present, rational form”. The last role is probing the limits of practical political possibility. Political philosophy must come up with a platform provides fair political structure to encourage support from people and hence bring order in the society.

In his theory of justice, Rawl argues that people are free and equal, and for the world to have fairness, all individuals with self-interests and ruled by ignorance should form the society into a real world through two moral powers. These are the two principles he outlines as a guide to justice as fairness namely: the principle of liberty and difference principle. The first principle respects citizen’s basic rights and liberties permitting equal rights to all. These rights include freedom to vote, freedom of expression and so on. The second principle suggests that social and economic inequalities are to be settled by attaching them to offices and positions obeying fair equality of opportunity. These resources should benefit everyone including the least advantaged in the society. People should have same equal rights to employment and allowed to participate in the economic development without discriminating them. Citizens should be allowed to participate in public policy and hold places in the positions of authority irrespective of their social class.

Rawl suggests that his theory is “compatible with such different social, economic systems as capitalism and socialism”. According to Rawl, people have different conditions upon their societal structure, which bring a profound difference and this why there is need of deriving social justice from a fair and equal point of view. Since every person looks forward to maximizing his interests and wellbeing, they all have the right to be considered just like everyone else. Their principles should be allowed to count because they also have some sense of justice.

Rawls solves ignorance of interests, social and economic information by mutual indifference. It prevents people from being influenced when contracting. It puts people in a place where they can have fair circumstance from the start. Citizens want to in acceptance and cooperation with each other’s. They can willingly propose and follow rules as long as others will cooperate even if it means sacrificing some of their interests.
