Gender Fluid Children and Child Abuse

Child abuse involves causing grievous and harm to a child either physically, emotionally, psychologically or a combination of two or more. Such involves actions of imposing or permitting infliction of some kind that may bring harm upon a child. A parent, close relative, family colleague, or other grown-up may enact childhood manipulation. Abusive practices may become possible when an adult misuses the authority, trust, as well as vulnerability describes child/adult interactions (Israel 3). In many circumstances, abusing adults may be so devoted in attaining their personal desires, or simply responding to emotional situations, that they do not recognize their deed as causing pain, mistreatment as well as distress. When can it be said that a child has been abused and how do we go about talking about it? Gender fluid is used to describe kids who substantially challenge gender expectations, including gender non-conforming, gender variant and  gender creative (Pyke 1). The paper will look at gender identity in the context of child abuse.

Pyke states gender fluid “encompasses a range of possible expressions and experiences.” Abuse will surely find its place among these expressions and experiences. Consider the story regarding Baby Storm, the Canadian baby whose gender identity is a close secret (Davis and James 1). It can be described as child abuse because it will lead to emotional abuse of the child throughout its life. From the article, despite the fact that child development experts highly praised the family`s efforts to bring up their child free of the constraints of gender stereotypes, they say the parents have embarked on a psychological experiment that could be possibly devastating. This is an abuse issue because having a sense of self and personal identity is a critical part of normal healthy development. Therefore, by hiding the identity of a child from the day he or she is born inhibits the child’s social growth and sets the child up for bullying, as well as sidelining and possibly further abuse.

It is noted that large number of parents are always eager to learn the sex of their child. Statistics show that 66 percent of eighteen to thirty four year olds declared that they would rather know the sex of the child before it is born (Davis and James 6). The general orientation has it that every person has sexual identity. The duty to have manly and womanly characters more balanced and flexible and not disapproving is overwhelming in a perfect society. Conversely, people take self-importance in their gender distinctiveness. Therefore, from these views, it is clear that the decision that was taken by any parent of not stressing their child’s identity to the society or taking the child as either a boy or a girl is a terrible idea that could result in the child being emotionally abused as he grows up.

Studies affirm that gender nonconformity is a sensitive issue, and parents who do not make an effort to steer a child to a specific gender identity will have to contend with accusations of neglect that will lead to abuse. Such an issue would somehow affect the wellbeing of the child. Although parents may not recognize that they are harming or creating unforeseen difficulties for their children, gender identity issues are the main cause of child ridicule in various societies, considered as abuse.

The public is still hostile to those who are gender fluid as, “the assumption that all natal males will naturally grow up to be men, and all natal females will naturally grow up to be women, is so pervasive it is rarely spoken” (Tyke 5). Another example as discussed by Morris is demonstrated by an ad that was run which showed a boy`s toenails with pink painting. The public outrage alleged that the parent of that child was abusing him behind the concealment of substantial parenting freedom where the child can be open to any influence. Using a child for experimenting gender identity leads them to experience emotional disturbance when they mature because they end up being rejected and bullied by friends either at school or during any other social gathering.

Therefore, it is imperative that parents use their influence to bring up their children wisely and in the correct manner and to revere their privileges as figures of authority that mould their children’s gender identity. It is through such practices that the issue of gender fluidity can be eradicated in the society. Additionally, action should be taken to deal with parents who are abusing their children`s rights in the name of allowing them have a gender identity that is not theirs.

In conclusion, although it is not widely accepted in society, for those who are liberal should pull the others along and for this, I will borrow from Gender independent kids: A paradigm shift in approaches to gender non-conforming children in Pyke’s own words. “At the very least, what we can learn from the increasing numbers of young people transitioning to new gender roles is that the body and its meanings are contingent. For some young people, puberty might be delayed, or might be reversed with cross-sex hormonal treatment. For these young people, transition is part of the life cycle, and must be presented as such in mainstream society
