Manager’s Interview

In my interview with Wesley Kraig, the manager, I was able to understand his role in the healthcare field and what leadership and professionalism implies to him as a manager and a healthcare practitioner. Kraig confirmed that he has been a practicing nurse for 23 years and he currently serves as the Emergence Room Manager at the healthcare facility. According to him, the healthcare facility has 300 licensed beds and 20 emergency room beds.

Mr. Wesley considers professionalism as complying with the moral and nursing ideals of care. He further asserts that professionalism is all about being straightforward, chivalrous, and cognizant of the roles and responsibilities based on ethical requirements. In his capacity as a manager and a leader, Wesley says that he has a responsibility to all the patients, colleagues and the healthcare facility to be professional in the manner he conducts himself and performs his responsibilities. He is required to be presentable to match his actions with words. For example, nurses should be tidy to enable them instill confidence in patients. The manager emphasizes that the core aspects of being professional are respecting, encouraging, and working as a team.

Mr. Wesley considers himself a steward. According to him, a steward is an individual who assists in organizing people, addresses their concerns, and manages their daily engagements (Travis, Egger, Davies & Mechbal, 2002). Through their stewardship, Wesley and Clare care for the patients in the hospital through effective organization to meet their needs.

In advocacy and power, the manager states that it is significant for all nurses to be advocates to the patients and other parties in the healthcare facility. According to Wesley, authenticity is crucial since it can impact the nursing workforce and delivery of healthcare in the society. He maintains that establishing a healthy working atmosphere for the nursing practice is important in sustaining a sufficient nursing labor force. The manager states that the nursing profession has several challenges currently, which enhance the rising shortage of nurses. Power has different implications to different people; however, the manager believes that power is the influence one has on people. Effective leaders use power in a restrained manner to enhance employees’ self-esteem, which is significant in leadership. The manager concluded the interview by asserting that good leaders influence groups in the right course and influence defines leadership.

In comparing the two interview responses, I would conclude that both the nurse and the manager in the healthcare facility understand and appreciate the concept of professionalism and stewardship. They acknowledge the importance of observing values and ethical standards in the nursing practice. Moreover, the two practitioners emphasized that appearance and the way of doing things are vital in professionalism. Therefore, the nursing practitioners’ conducts should match their physical appearance. Professionalism entails adhering to unswerving civility of the nursing principles. Stewardship in nursing entails the best models in providing effective nursing care in a health facility in collaboration with the changing trends in nursing. Both the interviewees hold the same concept of stewardship, which mainly advocates for effective leadership that meets the needs of all parties in the healthcare facility. Effective professionalism and stewardship require nurses to perform their responsibilities effectively (Council, 2003). Moreover, power and influence as depicted from the two interviews should aim at controlling employees and providing leadership that motivates the nurses to deliver effective healthcare services to the patients.
