The continuous advancement in technology has revolutionized the traditional healthcare system which has in turn caused a significant improvement on healthcare services. The unprecedented increase in the number of patients has created the need for hospitals to properly collect, archive, and analyze the massive healthcare data.

How has informatics affected your workplace environment?

The term ‘informatics’ was conceptualized as the scientific process of gathering, manipulating, storing, retrieving, and classifying recorded information (In Hoyt & In Yoshihashi, 2014). Informatics has proved to be a fundamental tool in the current healthcare setting. Healthcare informatics has greatly transformed and improved the quality standards of healthcare  services. Communication and coordination among the medical practitioners has also improved with most clinicians getting exposed into utilizing the latest forms of healthcare technologies. The incorporation of informatics with healthcare has  also reduced the cost of providing efficient healthcare solutions.   

Which biomedical equipment have you used or seen used? How does the use of this equipment impact care?

In the ancient days, a vast majority of healthcare institutions faced the dubious task of storing and retrieving health records. During those days, all patient’s records had to be written down on paper and kept on files. However, trouble would always arise when the patient visited the same premises after weeks, months or even years. The confusion caused by misplaced written medical records has however been solved after the development of Electronic Patient Records (EPR). EPR is an important healthcare asset that allows authorized clinicians to be able to access a patient’s medical history. EPR functions by utilizing an Application Service Provider (ASP) that is normally powered by internet (In Hoyt & In Yoshihashi, 2014). ASP allows both the EPR software and patients data to reside on a remote web server that only authorized medical practitioners can access while at hospital (In Hoyt & In Yoshihashi, 2014). Aside from the patient’s data, the clinicians may also view images such as x-rays. EPR is thereby recognized as a transformational tool that works to promote quality healthcare and patient safety. In essence, healthcare informatics continues serves a paramount role in improving healthcare delivery services, education and medical research.
