Improvement in the Healthcare System
Nursing profession is one of the critical points in the development of the healthcare system. The training and qualification systems should ensure this continual growth. The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is one of the measures to maintain/improve this stance. The DNP concentrates on the competencies and means of enhancing them, unlike traditional doctorate degrees in nursing. Traditional doctorate degrees focus on academic research which may not have a big impact in the actual nursing practice that tries to enhance healthcare systems. Current healthcare systems focus on reducing costs, increasing population health and satisfaction.

The DNP essentials include scientific underpinning, organization and system leadership for quality improvement, clinical scholarship and analytical methods for evidence-based practice. Others include interprofessional collaboration and healthcare policy and advocacy (Joshi, 2014; Strome, 2014). These are the critical areas for the improvement of the healthcare system. By considering healthcare policies and advocacy, the increasing number of hospitalizations can be tackled through improved healthcare systems. Improving the healthcare system especially for emergencies in US hospitals is a critical research area. Patient handling and service delivery are key factors in such researches (Ross, 2014). Technology can be incorporated for improvement of these factors. The healthcare data like the number of visits, level and type of medical condition will provide a basis for the classification of the general patient condition and decision on the type of medication and the specialized patient care required.
As a leader of the research team on improving the healthcare system across the country, I would request for the healthcare data across the different health institutions. These data from the electronic health records provide a base for the analysis of the system (Joshi, 2014). The electronic health data offered a wide resource considering it made the test results, prescriptions, demographic data, diagnosis and previous hospitalizations available. Scientific data analysis like risk levels, variance and the skew factor of the demographic sample presented the firm basis for development of a technological solution. The software would record the patient’s visits, type and degree of ailment and the severity of the case (Lazakidou, 2012). It would actually gauge the severity of future visits so that healthcare measures can be implemented on the patient to prevent such expensive future visits. The healthcare system has diverse interdependent factors and organization levels which presents a complexity challenge regarding improvement of healthcare system. The Complex Adaptive System (CAS) principle reiterates improvement of each factor, which will impact the whole system positively.
The CAS upholds inter-professional collaboration between the nurses and other health specialists like doctors can enhance healthcare delivery system. This collaboration improves communication between the nurses and other healthcare practitioners which build good working relation. An enhanced working relation has been shown to impact positively the service delivery. Therefore, the inter-professional collaboration will facilitate better care and patient outcomes, which translates directly to improved population health.
The information accrued from this study on improvement of healthcare system has to be disseminated to the stakeholders in the healthcare system. The main stakeholders in this system are the healthcare providers/institutions, the government and the patient population. The dissemination plan would include media coverage and press releases. Newspapers, television and radio channels would share information regarding the CAS systems and its potential impact of revolutionizing the healthcare system for wider population coverage. The project findings will be made available to concerned government departments and professional nursing and medical journals. These will update the professionals on the recent and effective trends of the CAS and its potential impact to the healthcare system. With a well-informed patient population and professionals, the effectiveness of the healthcare system will improve to match the stakeholders’ (majorly the government and the patient population) expectations.
The effectiveness of healthcare delivery systems is linked to several factors including practice, organization, population, fiscal and policy issues. A change in any of these DNP essentials will impact the overall effectiveness of the healthcare delivery system. The practice factor relates to the skill level of the health practitioners and their observance of professional ethics. This sets the environment for delivery of healthcare services to the population.
