Reflection on Nursing Philosophy


            When I declared my professional legacy as a nurse, I knew there is something I can do better in the healthcare system because of my efforts. More intently, my motivation as a nurse is to maintain the focus of achieving a great legacy and experiencing meaning in the entirety of my nursing career. To date, I see future personal and professional benefits coupled with pursuing the RN-BSN program (Athanasakis, 2013). More intently, I have always wanted to pursue the RN-BSN path, as it would hone my nursing competencies, and I would be capable of providing a higher level of nursing care.

How My Vision for the Future has changed

            In 2 years’ time, I would like to acquire the essential technical and organizational skills in nursing practice, and this would be an initial step in my transition to becoming a nurse practitioner. Additionally, I would like to get comfortable with executing all tasks competently while honing my skills and intellect in the entire aspect of caregiving (Felicilda-Reynaldo & Utley, 2015). Most importantly, in two years, I would like to appreciate my consistent learning, growth, and adapting to the situations I encounter in my daily shift. Overall, I would like to enhance my critical thinking abilities so that I guarantee favorable patient outcomes.

            After five years, I would like to build up a broad knowledge base in nursing because of my extensive research practices and work experience. Moreover, I want to be able to possess the capacity to teach and mentor the nurses in their early career stages (Heaslip, Hewitt-Taylor & Rowe, 2012). More intently, I want to prioritize relationships by focusing on patients’ families and communities with the overall intent of improving patient outcomes in all scenarios. Undoubtedly, after five years I want to have an enhanced nursing judgment whereby I judge by applying the synthesis of knowledge from nursing and other disciplines.

            After 10 years, I want to nurture clinical expertise, research expertise and teaching expertise in the nursing profession. I hope that I will be viewed as a nurse practitioner who is eligible for a tenured faculty or a consultancy position. Additionally, at this point in my career I would like to develop many scholars and contributors in the science of nursing practice (Hinds et al., 2015). At this point in my nursing career, I would be happy to provide leadership and to participate in interprofessional collaboration in multiple healthcare arenas with the aim of developing innovative programs and practices of care for diverse populations.

Two Examples That Have Changed In My Behaviors Because Of the RN-BSN Program

            First, I have had a transformed attitude towards the aspect of giving care because of my enrollment into the RN-BSN program. Specifically, I have learned that for me to provide care that culminates to enhanced patient outcomes I have to immerse myself in the situation that a particular patient is facing. Hence, this enables me to appreciate the patient’s situation while figuring out the best way I can remain vigilant so that I deliver quality care to the patient (Mizell, Washington-Brown & Russell, 2014). The RN-BSN program has also bequeathed to me the aspect of prioritizing relationships, and this enhances my attitude towards giving care.

For instance, because of the RN-BSN program I am capable of seeing the big picture. Before I joined, I saw a patient as an individual who expects me to do something for him/her so that they can heal. After joining the RN-BSN program, I see a lot more in a patient (Athanasakis, 2013). I think about the patients’ disease process and how I can help these particular patients. I not only look at the patient. I also watch the patient’s family, how they interact, and how the patient’s disease is affecting the entire family.

Secondly, I have nurtured the skill of confronting and conquering challenges. I have the capability to think about practice on a multi-dimensional level because of the RN-BSN program. More specifically, the program has nurtured a myriad of skills in me. I am now an active listener, I am innovative, and most importantly, I have developed an immense passion for nursing (Felicilda-Reynaldo & Utley, 2015). I have developed in the aspects of giving care, sharing knowledge, and being available when needed. Undoubtedly, the program has developed my nursing profession in leadership, and I have learned to contribute adequately in the inter-professional healthcare arena.

To illustrate my second change in behavior. When I joined the RN-BSN program, it was a tremendous challenge balancing home, school, and work especially when assignments were due. In some extreme cases, I asked myself why I was pursuing the program. I learned that my classmates are an adequate source of support. I have transformed my behaviors because of the program. I share knowledge, I embrace confidence, I embrace passion, and I am always available when it counts to deliver quality care (Hinds et al., 2015).


            When I formulate my career plan, I find it necessary to meet my professional needs at all times by ensuring I deliver quality care to realize enhanced patient outcomes. The RN-BSN program addresses care across the continuum (Heaslip, Hewitt-Taylor & Rowe, 2012). The program has bequeathed to me a myriad of benefits because it has enabled me to advocate for the patients and their families by being available when needed and executing the appropriate interventions.
