Impairment

Impairment function and disability are phrases often used together to refer to neurological developments. It is however crucial to note that, they have two different means. The different meanings ought to be recognized in order to understand how neurological injuries affect developments among human beings. Impairment function refers to the loss of psychological, anatomical, and physiological functions or structures. It can also refer to the abnormal functioning of the body and mind hindering a human being to maintain normal and balanced emotional, physical, psychological, and mental capabilities (Bedirhan & Cille, 2009).

When a person injures his/her back, it is possible to suffer from impaired functioning of the muscles, spine, discs, and joints among other body structures. Thus, an example of impairment function includes the actual damage of the back or spine hindering the victim to achieve full and normal functioning of the legs. This often leads the victim to depend on a walking cane in order to achieve limited physical movement functions. When an individual’s ability to lift heavy objects and engage in physical movements for a prolonged period of time is adversely affected, it can also refer to impairment function. This is because the functioning capability of various body structures is limited (Sheena, 2015).

Disability on the other hand is a term applied to describe severe impairment function. Thus, disability refers to damage, harm, and suffering experienced by an individual without the ability to engage in common physical activities (Bedirhan & Cille, 2009). These activities include working, bending over to pick something and taking a shower alone. Thus, disability refers to either lacking or restricted capabilities enabling a human being to perform basic and manual activities within the normal range undertaken by other individuals such as family members and friends. Thus, the inability to read is also a disability as the eye and mental functions are severely impaired (Sheena, 2015).

  1. How can disabilities attribute to impairment functions?
  2. What are the measures to undertake to ensure impairment functions do not attribute to disabilities among adults and children?
