Growth and Development

A child grows and develops in stages, which are characterized by different psychological and social factors. My interaction with a five years old child at a daycare depicted the following observations. First, the child became aware of my presence and greeted me warmly. After some few minutes, he retired to work by playing the dough. He created different shapes that portrayed his interaction with the environment. Some of the shapes resembled human beings while other vehicles. This is the initiative part of his life that is attributed to psychological growth. I realized that a child at this age have constant mood swings.  It is usually contributed by other people, surroundings, or even themselves. To express his feelings, the child used different strategies like crying and destroying the model (Krogman, 2012). The child became frustrated in the event the model failed to replicate the real object leading to rework.

Erickson’s Stages of Life

            The Preschool age is from 3-6 years. A child is free to move about to familiarize himself with the environment. The world of physics dawns on him as he keeps himself busy through modeling objects. The child may experience guilt in the event the initiative fails. The drawbacks attributed to initiative verses guilt find its way at this stage. Moldering items insinuates that the child is going through initiative while the act of expressing displeasure is due to guilt for failure. According to Erickson’s Stages of Life, development takes place in three stages which includes psychosocial development, moral development and cognitive development.

Psychological Development Age

In most cases, a child demonstrates high psychological development such as creating objects. This is why the reason as to why the boy was able to conceptualize the image of a man and mold it using dough. The expected growth is that the child recognizes and learns from the surrounding. However, the kid refrained from asking questions as expected hence forming a contrast (Hockenberry, Wilson & Wong, 2013).

Moral Development

Children at this age, demonstrates moral behaviors learnt from their parents, family, and close people. The child greeted me with respect as shown by the parent. From the observation, the five years old boy unconsciously felt uneasy after he failed in his endeavor. However, children tend to learn from their own mistakes.

Cognitive Development

The child recognized my presence as well as their environment by molding items as expected. In addition, the modeled things depicted the objects that the kid comes across. Contrary, he was unable to name everything he made due to mixed feelings. As a matter of fact, this reality dawns on him by the time he will be turning seven years old or above.

The Role of Play

Content

The content in the play comes from the surrounding hence ensures that they gain knowledge about the environment within their bounds. In so doing, they are able to experience nature.

Social Character

A play is socially important to a child since it helps him or her to be socially competent and emotionally mature. Therefore, the social play enhanced the psychosocial welfare that improved the boy social life.

Function

A play is meant to provide children with speech and language opportunities that help them learn to communicate. Play also plays the role of boosting cognitive development.
