Part I: Understanding and Applying Prospect Theory at Work

Directions:  After watching the short video on Prospect Theory and making your choices (Money Dilemma and Trolley Dilemma) in the Prospect Theory Handout (and watching the post-video explaining your choices), you should now understand why employees engage in risk aversion vs risk seeking and their preferences for impersonal vs personal approaches to decision-making behavior.

I want you to briefly describe a conflict scenario (real or hypothetical) at work (according to the assumptions of Prospect Theory) where an employee would engage in risk aversion behavior. Make sure to indicate why risk aversion would be a likely response in your scenario (according to Prospect Theory).

Risk Aversion Scenario:

Now describe another conflict situation at work where an employee would engage in risk seeking behavior. Make sure to indicate why risk seeking would be a likely response in your scenario (according to Prospect Theory).

Part II: Anger Responses at Work

Directions:  Now that you understand how adults have predictable reactions of anger during conflict, I want you to predict the likely anger response at work to the following scenarios. Your answer must be one of the 4 anger responses: frustration, reproach, pure anger, or resentment.  Please write the anger response that is most likely to result in the following scenarios:

1) Your coworker gets a bigger office than needed because he is a family member of the CEO, not because he actually needs the space.

Anger Response = ______________________________

2) Your boss is on vacation so you call her cell phone. You call because you need some important information about a customer who wants to renew a large contract with your company.  Your boss does not answer your call or call you back all day because her cell phone was charging in her hotel room and she was on the beach. You end up losing the large contract with the customer.

Anger Response = _____________________________

3) Your coworker ends up breaking the photocopier and does not tell anyone (just walks away).  When you need to make some important copies, you are unable to and have to drive to an office supply store and spend your own money to make copies.

Anger Response = ______________________________

4) Your coworker decides to sign your name on a document for quick processing, even though it is illegal and you have to sign it yourself. Your coworker does not get caught and the signature looks like yours and is accepted.

Anger Response = ______________________________

5) Your secretary lies to you and says that she never received your email, even though you know the email went through from your sent folder.

Anger Response = ______________________________

6) Your coworker misses an important meeting with you because of a flat tire.  The meeting must be rescheduled at a later time that is not ideal for you.

Anger Response = ______________________________
