Motivational Factors in Learning

Motivation is required to facilitate learning processes. Learning may take place in a broad array of ways ranging from the absence of an instructor to a structured environment that fosters teacher-learner interactions. Motivation remains a critical aspect of learning that affects the performance and success of students. The mistake that most instructors do is to focus on content delivery without considering learner motivation. I believe that instructor needs to consider motivation to accord learners the opportunity to excel in learning activities. Motivation is one of the potent factors of learning because it can impede or facilitate a student’s learning experience.

Class and curriculum structuring is one of the motivation factors that affect learning. I thrived well in the Operation Management class because there was a coherent structure of the curriculum supported by an elaborate course outline. I have discovered learners develop a sense of security if they realize that classes follow a well-defined structure and that the curriculum and course material are prepared beforehand. Jennings, Snowberg, Coccia and Greenberg (2011) agree that feeling a sense of security even in class is considered is important in boosting the morale of learners. When provided with adequate materials in a learning environment, students will alleviate fear and concentrate on the learning materials. Instructors can ensure they adequately prepare class notes and course to motivate learners and help them feel part of the leaning activity. The objectives of specific courses can equally be comprehensively stated at the beginning of the course or class so that learners are consciously aware of what to expect regarding learning.

Teacher’s behavior and personality is a motivation factor that can enhance or jeopardize learning. According to Brackett, Reyes, Rivers, Elbertson and Salovey (2011), negative emotions such as disliking a particular teacher affects the attitudes of a learner towards a given subject or course. During my learning session, I discovered that whenever a teacher used a derogatory language towards a student, motivation towards learning was greatly lowered hindering the ability of learners to succeed in learning endeavors. I felt bad and lost focus in learning whenever I observed a teacher humiliate another student during learning sessions. The behavior and personality of a tutor not only affects one learner but can affect other learners too. I recommend tutors should improve their behaviors and personalities manners that can positively motivate learners. The best strategy is for instructors to show kindness, optimism, encourage, and incorporate positive feedback during learning to motivate students to learn.

The teaching methods that instructors utilize can motivate learners to excel in learning endeavors. There are varied learning methods that teachers can utilize including kinesthetic learning, differentiated instructions, inquiry-based learning, personalized learning, and game-based instruction (Bunn, 2013). Inquiry-based instruction was a learning method that I enjoyed and was equally effective. The instructor of Operations Management course prompted thought-provoking questions which inspired me to become a more independent learner. I was able to investigate my ideas to further improve my problem-solving skills to gain a deeper understanding of the course concepts. The most effective strategy to improve student success in class is the use of various learning methods (Corso, Bundick, Quaglia & Haywood, 2013). The diverse learning methods will promote diversity and alleviate boredom in classrooms. The learners will thus retain their motivation to education if course content and extracurricular activities are used together during learning sessions.

Motivation is a key concept in learning because it can hinder or enhance student success. As part of the learning process, a reasonable level of motivation is required to enhance learning. Instructors can structure their curriculum and course contents, and communicate beforehand to students in an attempt to enhance learning. Furthermore, instructors can improve their behaviors and personalities to show kindness, optimism, and boost the morale of learners by encouraging them. Finally, instructors can utilize varied learning methods depending on learners’ need to improve their learning abilities and eliminate boredom that can derail learning processes. Indeed, instructors should be able to influence motivation of their learners because the outcomes can be tremendous.
