The case “A day in the life”, presents the observed characteristics of modern project manager. Rachel as the project manager for her management activities reveals issues such as how her impromptu check and asking of how the progress is disgruntling the teams working on the project (Larson, Gray, Danlin, Honig & Bacarini 2014). Additionally, she notices that the project people are also requesting for features not outlined in the project scope. Besides, she described the daily challenges that the project managers face and how they strive to overcome them. These are developments that can impair project process. Moreover, the fundamental subject observed in the illustrations of the cases is the significance and the role that the manager plays in overseeing the project and managing resource allocation and use on the scope. The supervision process on team dynamics has an impact on the success of the project given (Larson, Gray, Danlin, Honig & Bacarini 2014).

Valuable Lessons Learned

In the evaluation of the case reading, it is essential to have basic management skills that reflect the significance of studying project management. For instance, in the core of the case implementation is the choice of the right person to engage in the project (Larson, Gray, Danlin, Honig & Bacarini 2014).Therefore, a project manager must be an individual capable of making rational, informed, and independent decisions. In addition, allocation of duties and resources to the right individuals is essential to the overall success of the project.

I can confidently argue that I can apply the above-mentioned lessons. First, as a project manager, I can consistently organize meetings with my group members as a way of fostering communications, team building, and team cohesions. Second, I can coordinate with the other departments to enhance departmental understanding. Third, I can lobby with the human resource department to recruit individuals with my desired attributes.

Factors Preventing From Applying Learned Lessons

The course of executing the particular project objectives requires critical commitment and personal initiatives that facilitate successful managerial skills. First, I have inadequate skills to manage the dynamics of impromptu checks on the work progress. Consequently, constructing a clearly laid out plan and list on the expectations and provisions for the project is a significant challenge to implementing the lessons learned. The second drawback is my engagement in the non-project activities that result in time wastage. The third factor is the inability to recruit individuals having my desired attributes because the recruitment exercise is reserved for the human resource department.

There is a case where I came across similar lessons. In this case, the project manager experienced a challenge of bolstering team spirit after taking over from a manager who greatly damaged the spirit of the team because of the poor leadership.

The case of Manchester United Soccer Club entails Nicolette, a self-professed soccer mom who is charged with the task to organize a summer tournament for raising funds for the club refurbishments and expansion of the fields. She outlines how the first meeting resulted in free-flowing ideas (Larson, Gray, Danlin, Honig & Bacarini 2014). However, the issue of concern is that she is unable to decide on the concept of the course of the project. She does not have listed deliverables required for the project. 

Valuable Lessons Learned

 People constituting the team are essential elements in determining the decisions options available with effectiveness and efficiency (Larson, Gray, Danlin, Honig & Bacarini 2014). Therefore, it is essential to engage all the team members accordingly while facilitating them with the adequate support and guidance to arrive at a concrete decision rather than carrying the whole decision-making process to the self as Nicolette situation presents. Another lesson learned is the importance of the delegation of duties as a manager.

Factors Preventing From Applying Learned Lessons

Reflecting on the challenge that Nicolette faces in choosing the deliverables expected, the difficulty entailed in managing the balance in choices and the given critical need of the project can impair the course of successful decisions on a project. I observe the inadequacy I have in resource management as another critical factor which can impair my course of practical application of the lessons gathered on the management of the project. Nicolette’s dilemma is illustrative of my reaction towards tasks that have a significant impact on the outcomes. I would significantly have tension in deciding the course to undertake if I was in her situation. Consequently, I have a challenge in making a decision when under pressure.

Connections to Other Subjects or Experiences

The interconnectivity of lessons gathered in this case to the personal experiences is evident from the establishment that the scenario reflects the significant impact that decision making when under pressure can be difficult. Regularly, I take decisions in situations that am relaxed, however, when pressured, I tend to tense. Therefore, I could use this case learning to develop the successful approach to managing decisions. Moreover, this case is also connected with my limitation of delegations of duties. I always believe that I am the only individual capable of delivering the desired results.

The scenario of Nicolette in taking the decision from the ideas gathered in brainstorming meeting is critical in reflecting the significance that pressure to perform in the project outcomes can have on the personal skills of work. Following this realization, it is notable to engage other team members as well as, supporting decision-making tools to arrive at the expected and consequently appropriate decision. The lessons gathered in this case have changed my perception of decision-making tools regarding project management. More of the generic methods for making selection criteria are essential in approaching tasks given in the project course.

Gaps in Personal Learning

In a reflection of the case as studied, it is essential to develop the personal initiative to engage the collaborative topics such as administration to observe the core administrative components that can help me in becoming better at decision making. In a reflection of the course material and the impact of the class discussions, I have noted a significant level of personal growth in knowledge and attributes that are core in project control. However, I have realized the great need for developing the skill of decision making, particularly when there are extensive options to engage.
