Distinction Between Appearance and Truth in Literature

Appearance entails how someone or something looks. The notion is not a reality but a mere form of deception. Appearances, in a real sense, are masks that individuals put in for their advantage in life. On the other hand, truth in literature works refers to the state of things as they exist. The ability to discern truth in the real world is difficult because individuals emphasize appearances that coat the truth. At most times, the truth can be concealed to the extent that it cannot be recognized. Therefore, one should be keen enough to notice the truth from its appearance. There are specific characteristics of both appearance and truth; firstly, appearance is deceptive while the truth is not. Secondly, truth is permanent, while appearance is temporary. Thirdly, truth entails the reality of a particular aspect, while appearance entails the appearance of something that may lie in the log-run (Pitari, 14). Appearance and reality are two very commonly applied themes in literature work. The theme is applied not only in literary works but also in poetry, film, and day-to-day life. In literary works, the theme of truth and appearance leads to dialogues, characters, and incidents that are different from what they appear to be. The meanings of these works are pretty deep, and they only become apparent at the study end or even at a further extensive study. What we see as individuals cannot be a stepping stone to judging a person or a thing. This is the overall concept of reality and appearance. In most of Calvino’s literature, there is evidence of fantasy to address the truth. The works also show Calvino’s passion for literature beginnings and lack of trust in endings. This characteristic tells the reason why he had to move from one obsession to the subsequent searching for a different impossibility to write.

A narrator of the nonexistent knight novel mourns how Calvino makes use of pessimism in his work to balance exuberance. In the works of Rulfo, it is his rhythms that seem to slow time as realities also edge into space. Many of his works contain an elementary quality. Ralf shows his talent for dramatic monologue in his writing. This aspect seems to be borrowed from Faulkner. Reading the works of Ralf is compared to searching for a key in a collapsing building. The exploration of works by Rulfo is a remarkable journey in literature. The present paper seeks to analyze how the tension between truth and appearance allows both Rulfo and Calvino to depict the difficulty of existing in their respective novels.

Magical realism is a typical manner in which the literature of Calvino and that of Rulfo are written. The mode of narration entails unusual aspects of magic, and these elements are mixed up with real-life events. This technique of magical realism allows a more profound outlook on the general perception of reality. The use of this magical technique helps in understanding the actual world by separating from particular pictures of illusion. The magical realism approach is an example of a visual art genre in literature writing. In one of his works, the Pedro paramo, Rulfo majors on their tyranny. Juan, the main character, was told to go in search of his father. After she dies, the man comes to a deserted area to find that the area is filled with dead voices. The voices in this context are phantoms resulting from the past that tell Juan about the life of Paramo. The man also learns about the power in existence in the deserted area and the endless relations resulting in him destroying his life and his country. Listening to the sorrowful stories, Juan realizes that the realizations are dreamlike. Then Pedro confirms his death. Village ghosts cannot forget Pedro and his way of doing things, and when they narrate a story about him, they say that he deserved to depart. The literary works of Rulfo have a characteristic thought to be oral as they are constituted by monologues, dialogues, and several other enunciations. There are a few challenges to his work. The communications do not come out clearly due to unnecessary noise in the background and murmuring that affect comprehension of the texts and dialogues, causing them to wither upon enunciation. The successful verbality cannot be established; therefore, the narratives cannot create a communicative drive among themselves. The noise aspect in his works is key to getting a good understanding of concepts.

The cruel nature of Pedro Paramos in this story is also looked at in the family. Mother tells Paramo to compensate for all the years he has put them out of his mind. Therefore, it can be concluded that Juan and the story about the father’s departure is a current-day embodiment of a different story about Telemachus searching for Ulysses. In addition to this work of philosophy, there is a more detailed interpretation of the works of Rulfo. The work author put a lot of emphasis on the aspects of social and economic reforms and the clearest way of expressing them. In his works, there is a total deconstruction of power in the political sector (Zhang, 18). In this and other works of Rulfo, the theme of tyranny and national importance as well as the themes of philosophical work and family links are highlighted. The village streets are filled with the previous actions. In this novel, a strong will to be with relatives is evident.

The literary works of Calvino take the reader to the fantasy world. An example of his work is termed the fantasy world of Calvino, which entails nothing but undiluted fantasy. The success of Calvino’s first publication made his friends happy and so they encouraged him to publish more. The writer took his friend’s advice because he had a good fictional subject in his previous work of resistance. The works of Calvino equipped the readers with a way of fusing the landscape of Italians with themes of youthful action, the idealism of politics, and sexual liberty, all that had been hard to achieve under dictatorial leadership. The writer is termed as a legendary novelist with beautiful fiction and with full energy and classic lightness. According to Calvino, the written piece of work is not as important as the manner in which it is presented and availed to the audience. The changes in the ethical values of Calvino’s work occurred gradually. There is a presence of ancestral in Calvino’s tales and this quality is what links his works to the current day audiences. The writer relies much on the aspect of indirection and humor, a much common trait among many Italian writers. Calvino relies on the past as a way of connecting history with present perspectives. He makes it clear that if everyone can look with perspective, there can be a more clear vision of things as compared to when we rely on details of the planet around us. Calvino has a negative stand on the nature of politics and this relates to the way he views art. He does not involve himself in political and social life. As per this stand, Calvino advises that the reader should be embedded above the notion of politics. Other than basing his arguments on politics, Calvino loosens his obsessions hence liberating the obsessions of his readers as well. Through his intellectual curiosity, Calvino gets to acquire several ideas and forms. Calvino was quite stable in the intellectual world (Khanh, 21). Difficulty in Calvino’s work is evident in his desire for anonymity and privacy. At Columbia, Calvino was thorough and fully polite, but when it came to responding to questions from students, he would appear bored, because of his choice of privacy.

Generally, Calvino and Rulfo have been original and genuine in approaching literature works. The two have taken risks that most of the writers would have otherwise avoided. The two authors are termed writers who did almost everything in literature. The tone they use is mistake-free. They decorated science friction to resemble fables, and fantasy works to look like one is experiencing real-life realities. Their range of works is quite broad that it is impossible to trace the start point. This leaves readers to have different starting points for these works based on their tastes and preferences. These positive differences between the duo and other writers are a clear picture of the aspect of truth and reality helps depict the difficulty of existence. They are unique and that is what led to their success for many years.

In conclusion, the difference between appearance and truth in literature philosophy causes trouble. The same distinction causes little or zero trouble in the works outside of philosophy. This distinction has played a key role in several philosophers who have employed the aspect in curious ways to support certain paradox claims of their works. The distinctions have been applied in literature and real day interactions in different ways; looking at idiom which has several senses that must be maintained distinct. Secondly, the distinction is visible in Protagorean relativism. Thirdly, the distinction between truth and appearance is applied in the argument of illusion and has been used by several philosophers. The aspect of illusion is translated into that things at times appear different to different people or the same individual in varied instances. The distinction can also be applied in separating the notion of appearances from the impossibilities. Translated that yet some things appear diverse, some of them appear to move on. The two legendary writers, Rulfo and Calvino make use of certain styles of writing to elaborate on the distinguishing aspects of truth and appearance. The styles of these two writers allow them to tackle the tension created by appearance and truth and help them depict the difficulty of existing.
