Virtualize?

Server virtualization is a common practice among computer programmers and engineers and can be defined as an act of partitioning server into various smaller virtual servers. The purpose of this is to maximize the server resource. This act involves private and virtual servers where the server resources are kept away from users and the software in this case is used to partition the physical server into various multiple virtual environments (Wolf & Halter, 2005). This technology is commonly used in Web servers to provide considerately low cost web hosting activities. The technology has a number of advantages such as helping in conservation of energy. This happens because there is consolidation of many physical servers to virtual machine of fewer physical servers. This results in significant drop of the cost of cooling which in turn reduces the cost of power consumption. It is estimated that this cost of energy reduction is about 80%, this is according to VMware. The servers can also be powered down without having effect on users. The technology is also advantageous in that there is reduction of hardware cost.  This is due to increase in the hardware utilization since one physical server can now operate many virtual machines. The virtual machine in the physical server can now run the application making them not to require their own servers.

The report by IDC in 2011 indicates that IT departments that adopted server virtualization experienced 40 percent reduction in software and hardware costs. Moreover, it should be noted that server virtualization plays an integral role in improving disaster recovery. In case of a data center disaster, virtualization is already set up to for appropriate measures to such safe, smooth swift recovery (Wolf & Halter, 2005). Server virtualization also helps to increase the staff productivity since fewer servers require very little time to maintain and manage. This gives the employees or staff members the ability to have more time on other productive tasks in the company, with more focus on revenue rising. However, server virtualization may also have a number of disadvantages to the IT Company such as high risk in physical fault; a single hardware failure may put the entire server off line. This is a consideration in the production environment during planning. The disadvantage is that the technology could face risk of performance. Actually, there are some drawbacks associated with virtual environment in comparison with hardware in a physical environment. It is also noted that some application may not be ready for the virtualization. Some of the operating system may act differently in the new virtual environment setting a serious drawback in the implementing this process. Before implementation, there must be certification of the operating system on its support by the virtualization (Dittner & Rule, 2007).

Before installation of the server virtualization, there must be good implementation planning. A number of factors must be considered during planning. In the plan, there must be necessary account privileges to run the virtual backup in the environment such as configuration of the PHD VBA so as to enable PHD Virtual backup on VMware to perform backup, restores and replication. In the plan, there must be specificity on the type of console installed, weather PHD console and plug in or standalone PHD console (Eguibar, 2013). The third area of focus in the plan is where to store the back up plan which in this case is the attached virtual disk. The fourth point is identifying the number of PHD VBA needed and where to be deployed. The plan has also policy for the archive retention implementation and weather the email reporting will be used which of course will be required for this company. The plan considers replicating of VMs with VM replication and finally exporting backups for archives purposes with the PHD Exporter. This plan is the most comprehensive plan for installation and implementation of server virtualization. It is the best when followed since it has minimal risks and losses when followed accurately. Coming up with this plane and presenting to the senior management highlighting the benefits is a good strategy for the plan to sail through.

This company with over 400 servers is a service provider. Installing this kind of server virtualization will enable the company to gain a lot in terms of infrastructure. Installation of this service will offer potential revenue gain when coupled with the existing IT services offered by the company (Wolf & Halter, 2005). The cost and management complexities associated with data maintenance in this environment will be reduced greatly when this process is adopted and implemented. In other words, there are a number of ways the company can benefit from this robust technology.

There is a great importance of implementing a virtual infrastructure since it brings a positive transformation to the company, such as data recovery, reduced hardware coast economic and efficient use of energy, increased staff productivity and improved deployment and server provisioning. However, implementing this infrastructure might require proper expertise since it is a daunting task when moving to a virtual infrastructure (Wolf & Halter, 2005).
