People in America do not feed on French fries as a snack but as a meal that can be paired with anything (APRE 4). When I first moved to America, it became evident that French fries are a popular dish. Both adults and children enjoy this delicacy at home and in restaurants. It is a quick and affordable meal that can be eaten at any time of the day. Most fast food restaurants serve French fries as a staple dish providing customers with different flavors and toppings. Having lived in different parts of America, I have realized that there are different ways in which French fries are prepared. Also, different people enjoy distinct types of French fries.
My personal favorite is the crunchy French fries with onion rings. French fries are stripes of potatoes that are cooked in hot greasy oil and served with a topping of salt and tomato sauce, ketchup or mayonnaise, as well as a side of hamburger or piece of chicken. However, I prefer baking the potatoes fries with olive oil and a hint of garlic, with a serving of fried onion rings and a topping of ketchup. This combination is very addictive and goes well with a cold drink. Despite having tasted a variety of French fries served in restaurants, I find myself going back to my crunchy fries with onion rings all the time. Baked crunchy fries are simple and quick to prepare. The fries have a crispy outer layer and are soft inside, without an excessive greasy feel. Baking enables for them to stay crunchy even after they cool as compared to deep frying which makes them tender and mushy once they are cold.
The first step in preparing baked crunchy fries is to cut the potatoes into thin strips and soak them for at least half an hour to get rid of the excess starch. Secondly, arrange the stripes of potatoes on a baking tray that is lined with a parchment paper. The paper is crucial in ensuring that the fries do not stick on the tray hence remain crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Thirdly, prepare a mixture of two table spoons of olive oil with one clove of mashed garlic or garlic powder and apply it on the stripes of fries and ensure that they are evenly coated. I sometimes sprinkle some salt and pepper then allow it to bake for 35 minutes at 475o. At 15 minutes, I turn and toss the stripes to ensure that they are evenly cooked.
The crunchy French fries are golden brown and crispy once they cook. Just thinking about them now makes me hungry. Once they cool, I serve them with pan-fried onion rings and ketchup. A cold drink is a good accompaniment to this combination. I enjoy eating this meal with my friends and family, and often, I prepare it during the weekend. According to a research by APRE, French fries will continue to be a delicacy for years to come and remain to be a staple food in many households around the world (6). Although, French fries are considered to be unhealthy, I believe that one can create a healthy relationship with this delicacy. It is, however, important to find alternative ways to prepare or enjoy French fries without exposing oneself to health hazards.
