Teachers play a vital role in the development of a learner through the school system. Teachers apply various techniques in the classroom and using presentations to support the learner develop cognitive skills as well as personality. Besides enhancing skills like math, English, and sciences, teachers are responsible for managing the classroom, preparing lessons, grading papers, and working closely with other school staff and academic stakeholders to facilitate learning. However, I feel that being a teacher involves more than developing and using lesson [plans. In contemporary society, teaching is a multi-disciplinary approach that involves the roles of counselor, role models, planners, bookkeeper, mentor, and disciplinarian. Elementary level teachers play a crucial role in the development of the learner. Most of the lessons learned in the formative years shape the individual and prepare them for later life.
For me, I recognize that teachers play a very crucial role in the development of cognitive abilities as well as shaping personality. Teaching is a compelling and influential career because teachers prepare the next generation for their later life. Too many, teaching is a tedious and scary experience; however, successful teachers take pride in shaping the most prolific and accomplished members of society. That itself scares many people from the profession because it mainly involves preparing future generations and enhancing their skills to become better persons in the future. However, teaching is more than becoming the instructor; it involves becoming part of the learning process. You do not want your learners to be afraid of you, or view you as a commander who gives orders. My view is that teaching is a career where the instructor plays the role of a facilitator while giving children the freedom to express their thoughts and knowledge to let them learn. Teaching demands instructors to become part of students’ lives and activities to help them become skillful and responsible people in society.
As a teacher, the primary responsibility is to ensure pupils are enrolled in the right courses in terms of meeting their expectations, aspirations, needs, as well as developing their abilities. More to this, teachers need to ensure that learners are in the appropriate course and environment to facilitate the attainment of organizational demands and awards for the hard work they have put in their school life. Professionals in the teaching career can adopt various strategies to ensure learners are in the right environment to develop their capacities. Some of the responsibilities include promoting a safe and enhancing learning environment, promoting diversity and equality, modeling professional behavior to inspire young learners, and collaborating with other professions to improve the conditions, experiences, and environment to enhance performance and personal development of young learners. By fulfilling these obligations, the instructors are well assured that the pupils are in the right course of developing in the academic, social, and personal lives.
Teachers are known for their role in educating pupils placed in their care. However, teachers play other roles in and out of the classroom to set the tone of the classes, mentor and nurture the learners, become role models, and be keen to identify signs of problems among the learners. The primary role of instructors is to teach knowledge to the children while demonstrating a proper understanding of the content and profession. Teachers are given a curriculum they must adhere to the provided state guidelines. Teachers use lectures, small groups’ discussions, and hands-on learning activities to enhance learners’ development. Teachers adhere to the provided curriculum so that all relevant knowledge is dispensed to the learner over the provided period. Teaching knowledge allows the students to develop their cognitive abilities and gain professional insights that are valuable in later life.
As a teacher, I feel I must cultivate a learning environment for my learners. I understand the importance of teachers in creating a conducive classroom environment to enhance the learning process. By setting a warm, happy, and productive environment, I ascertain that the students will maintain a positive attitude, which is essential in student development. A positive environment promotes young learners to become inquisitive and participate in classroom activities while a negative environment impairs one’s abilities to develop as a successful learner. More so, students learn by imitating their elders. Therefore, by setting a classic example in the classroom activities, teachers are assured of the development of social and academic aspects of the students. Mostly, the behavior and attitudes students portray are the reflections of the teacher’s actions and conduct as well as the environment they create.
Teachers play a vital role in shaping the personalities of young individuals to become responsible people in later life in their capacities as mentors and role models. Typically, most teachers do not consider themselves as role models and expect pupils to pick role models beyond the teaching profession. However, they are the most significant role models and mentors for their pupils. Students spend most of their time in learning institutions and around teachers. Therefore, teachers become a great representation of responsible adult life and become the first inspiration for young learners. When students identify positively with instructors, they assume the role model position. Teachers command great respect in the society and therefore become role models to both parents and students. Besides, teachers play the role of mentoring their students to become better in different fields. Teachers encourage learners to strive to be better persons using various strategies to impart the sense of ownership and responsibility in the class environment. This motivation helps learners grow their confidence and increase their desire to be successful.
As a teacher instructor, I have identified the most critical moments during teaching are the beginning and end of a class. The activities that happen in these moments are crucial to influencing learners’ engagement in the classroom as well as the ability to synthesize the main concepts of the lessons in their development. For practical introduction and termination of lessons, teachers can apply various strategies such as group discussions, posing intentional questions, and dynamic reviews allow the students’ to connect with ideas and develop comprehensive conceptual frameworks. The opening and closing of a lesson can help a learner make connections between ideas and across class sessions that enhance understanding and exponential increase of context transfer. I consider the first five minutes of a lesson as the most crucial moment to promote students motivation and engagement. These moments allow the instructor to ask questions of the last experience, reflect on previous sessions, and reactivate prior knowledge. Some of the most successful ends of class strategies include a review of the learning objectives, summarizing lesson content, exploring difficulties within the lesson, and preparing students for the next session.
Teaching does not come without challenges considering the population you are dealing with. The teacher-student relationship is one of the fundamental aspects that influence students’ development both within and outside the classroom environment. The teacher-student relationship encompasses aspects of academics, discipline and conduct, role modeling and mentorship and parental obligations placed on the teacher. Teaching itself is a cumbersome and daunting task. However, instructors pride themselves in their contributions to preparing responsible citizens in different professions. Much of the learning involves the attitudes students develop around their learning environment. However, this does n occur without challenges. Most teachers and instructor, like me experience strained teacher-student relationship because of the attitudes presented by learners around various concepts. The most identified cause of friction between students and teachers highlights the play of discipline. Discipline is the most crucial aspect of a student that contributes to academic and personal development.
