Each process in place within an organization has statistics behind it that helps establish the procedure and determine the accuracy of the information or process considered. Forensic experts are currently able to study, predict, and explain the human behavior that eventually makes prediction about nature of a crime. Specifically in the criminal justice system, statistics has been used to boost the functionality of the law, including the enforcement officers (Fitzgerald & Fitzgerald, 2013). Human characteristics, commonly referred to as variables, are character traits of humans that are not fixed. These include crime rate, employment status, and age among others. There are measures of central tendency including mean, mode and median that are used to further analyze data and show features such as the average. Each of these statistical measures have been integrated into the criminal justice system to help define trends, determine changes, and even identify needs within the community that require immediate attention. This paper discusses the application and benefits of statistical data in the criminal justice system.

Benefits of using Statistical Data in Criminal Justice

Statistical information is vital for Criminal justice department since it helps forensic experts determine the nature of a crime or establish a connection between tendencies and perpetrators. Forensic experts have the option of developing a hypothesis or theory which then helps the investigators determine the connection between variables. Using the relationship helps to determine whether the cause identified translates to the anticipated effect or a related issue that could be investigated.

Statistical data plays a major role in criminal justice by predicting and explaining the patterns of human behavior (Weisburd & Britt, 2013). Before conducting any investigation, there must be a specific sample population that is determined. Crime is associated with many societal concerns. Proper understanding into such matters allows for accurate and critical analysis to be made. It helps with the establishment of the theories made of different social groups. Use of statistical data in criminal justice helps illustrate an existing theory and proves its accuracy. Additionally, it helps in boosting law by determining the progress report of specific traits such as increase in violent behaviors in schools by teenagers and how best to manage it before it becomes impossible.

Additionally, statistics forms the basis of survey and casual studies. For accurate data there is need for studies and surveys not to be biased (Helmus & Babchishin, 2017). Criminal justice is not based on a specific group in reference to their ethnicity, race or culture. There is need to include all the sample population that fit the specified criteria in order to come up with an accurate data that is reliable.

Statistical data analysis also allows observations to be made across time, enabling the identification of emerging trends. It is possible to identify specific arrears that require greater attention due to increased trend. Governments have laws that help govern the different areas to shape a society that is safer for people. It is only through statistical data analysis that the government can determine the effectiveness of the policies and how best to improve it for effective use. Once the statistical analysis is done, the results obtained are not limited by time or space. The obtained results may be used for verification of theories later on in time and still obtain the same conclusion as it was before. As such, there is need of collecting data across the board without baseness. 

Statistics is divided into two groups, that is, inferential and descriptive statistics. Descriptive statistic helps in describing, showing or summarizing data, but does not allow any conclusion beyond the analyzed data. Meaning, the results obtained cannot be used to come up with a conclusion regarding a given hypothesis. Inferential statistics on the other hand helps Forensic experts use samples to come up with a general view of the whole population from which the sample is obtained. It is therefore vital that the sample represents the population, meaning that during collection of sample baseness should be prohibited. In criminal justice system, both of inferential and descriptive statistics are used (Douglas et al, 2017). Descriptive statistics is used to determine specific patterns of a specific crime, that is, how it occurred. But in order to get an insight of the same crime, inferential statistics is used to come up with a general characteristic of a specified crime.

In conclusion, all statistical data processed allows the criminal justice system to meet their statutory goals that includes public safety and apprehension of offenders. It helps bring out authenticity of the criminal justice system and at the same time helps organize the future success rates of managing crime. Without it, it would be impossible to distribute resources to manage the maximum potential areas of need. There are huge benefits for the criminal justice system and the individual agencies within the department in the adoption and use of statistical data. With the immense benefits that statistical data offer the criminal justice system, there is need for more awareness into understanding the application of the system and the benefits that the government and the department as a whole stands to gain from the approach.
