Cybercrime in the Digital Space

Cybercrime is the use of computer devices to cause security threats via a network. Cybercrime has been increasingly becoming a major source of concern within the digital space. The Australian government says that cybercrime defaulters mainly target businesses, education institutions, and governments (2020). The more network devices, networks are expanded, the more the cybercrime increases (Chhikara, Jyoti, et al, 2013). Cybercrime has become a menace in recent moments as the World International Bodies such as United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) have formulated policies to deal with the issue. One such policy by UNODC is to help governments fight against Cybercrime. This paper will discuss Cybercrime in depth including the major effects on individuals, businesses, and governments and measures that need to be put in place.

Identity depth is the stealing of one’s personal information through a series of online fraudulent activities by attackers. The attackers employ a range of methods to lure the victim into giving out personal information or even obtain some amount of money through identity theft. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has issued an advisory to the public on the recommended ways of dealing with online fraud. For example, a website has been made to resemble that of a particular organization, but its main function is to collect personal information from unsuspecting individuals for fraudulent activities.

Phishing is a form of online fraudulent activity targeting unsuspecting users to click into attachments contained in e-mails that opens up malicious software or take them to a fake website. When the victim provides personal information such as bank information, the attacker might exploit the data in the future (Chhikara et al., 458). Phishing remains a concern in the online space as individuals’ data are collected. The attacker can later use several strategies to cripple the victim or gain personal benefits from the data.

Ransomware is a form of cybercrime in which target data is encrypted making the data inaccessible until a sum of money is paid for the attackers to decrypt. According to International Creative Media Award (ICMA) magazine, an incident of ransomware affected a police Department called Roxana Illinois forcing them to carry out a system restart to clear all the data infected with ransomware attacks. The company had backups and they were able to recover the data. Although the process still cost them time and money in dealing with the ransomware attack (Cliff). From the study, ransomware remains a major concern to businesses and government organizations.

Malware is a threat to cyber security as its purpose is intended to attach to a computer device then perform malicious activities in the background. A virus is a form of malware that attaches itself to a computer device and it can spread from one device to another. Malware attacks came on the rise during the Covid-19 pandemic and have seen a sharp increase in vulnerable people and systems through e-mails and fake websites (Pranggono et al). Malware is preventable by various measures as recommended by Pranggono et al.

Cybercrime prevention measures include the use of Virtual Private Network (VPN) to establish an encrypted pathway of data sharing via a network, firewall implementation to filter network traffic, antivirus software to perform routine checks on the system, network segmentation to separate critical networks from less secure networks, implementing strong security policies for target organizations, enforce multi-factor verification among other security measures, (Pranggono et al). For a more secure prevention measure from cybercrime, different methods can be put in place to achieve a Defense-in-depth mechanism.

 

 

Conclusion

Cybercrime threatens individuals, businesses, and government organizations in the digital space. Various services are run through the digital space and this data shared online is susceptible to attackers if proper care and security tools are enforced. The digital space is increasingly expanding and this has, in turn, led to the influx of cybercrime cases tending to halt the operations. However, the provision of standards by internationally recognized bodies such as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in cooperation with local governments is a breakthrough in providing ways to combat cybercrime.
