Air transportation has been termed as one of the safest and fastest in the world. As a business, air transportation has become it has attracted a lot of clients. Airline Schedules are one of the key elements of an airline and the main factor in passenger’s choice of a carrier. Scheduling is one of the most difficult tasks in airline business. The major internal factors that affect the scheduling process include equipment maintenance requirements, flight operations, facility constraints, as well as market factors. The external factors that could affect the same are airport authorities, the U.S. Postal Service, local communities, hotel operations, travel agents, and air freight shippers (Kane, 2012). The main purpose of the maintenance organization of an airline is to ensure a safe, salable aircraft for every schedule.

One of the key maintenance efficiency goals is to minimize the aircraft that are out of service time. The other goal is to ensure optimum utilization of personnel and reduce the workload. These goals do not affect safety, but they can impact the schedule planner (Kane, 2012). The flight operations department should make sure that flights are scheduled in a manner that allows them to be safely and efficiently operated. Some of the critical operational aspects in schedule planning are runway lengths, aircraft fuel capacity, habitual adverse weather, and crew time limits (Kane, 2012). Runway lengths and aircraft fuel capacities influence scheduling decisions. Other significant elements in drafting schedules are a climatic condition, aircraft routines, and flight crew scheduling (Kane, 2012).

Ground service can be organized in conceivable schedule patterns provided that the ground equipment, passenger service facilities, and personnel are not limited. The objective of ground service is to accommodate as many flights as possible and be as efficiently as possible. The goal should be consistent with physical limitations and prudent utilization of personnel and equipment. Usually, the scheduling department measures the physical and personnel requirements through the visual layout of the schedules at every station. Flights are normally plotted on a station plotting chart, which documents sequence and schedule time of operation using certain standards and codes. Productive resources have the one key essential function of operating the schedule safely and dependably (Kane, 2012). The schedule planner’s most important function is to evaluate the mentioned objectives and decide the most optimal balance between them. However, the complexities of air scheduling extend far beyond the problems experienced. Many airline marketing issues are unique and originate from the special nature of the airline business. Even though traffic data can be obtained from the internet, historically, airline scheduling has been undertaken using limited sources of traffic data.

Airline scheduling can be defined as the art of scheming fight patterns that offer optimum public service in quality and quantity (Kane, 2012). They should be consistent with the financial status of the carrier. The public service and the economic elements of scheduling should be balanced with factors such as equipment maintenance, crews, facilities, and marketing factors.
