Question 1

An SMS paves the way for the integration of modern safety assurance and safety risk management concepts into systems that are proactive and repeatable. Besides, an SMS helps organizations to identify and control risks while giving an assurance of the effectiveness of the risk controls. Another advantage of SMS is that it provides organizations with a roadmap for examining and analyzing safety-related processes. It is also important to note that SMS helps in improving employee satisfaction as they are involved in the process.

Safety management system plays a crucial role in managing safety elements or perspectives in the workplace, which in this case, focus is on the aviation industry. It is a system that provides a platform through which hazards and risks are identified and controlled while maintaining assurance that the risk control strategies are indeed effective.

The first pillar of a Safety Management System is safety policy, and here, the focus is on procedures, policies as well as the structure of organizations and how they influence safety management. The second pillar is safety risk management, which focuses on the identification and assessment of risk, system monitoring, and resource allocation. Safety assurance is the third pillar, which focuses on continuous improvement of the quality of organizational products and processes. The final pillar is safety promotion, which is realized through continuous communication of safety practices and values.

There are 8 components of Safety Management, the first one being the commitment of senior leadership to safety management and this can be realized within the University of Dubuque’s Aviation Program and Flight Operations when the top or senior leadership offer support to SMS through actions and words. Secondly, there is the effective and consistent reporting of safety issues, and this can be realized when there is willingness of employees and other stakeholders of the mentioned organization to submit information and data regarding safety. Third is continual monitoring, which can be realized when members of the already mentioned organization are concerned with its effectiveness, failure or successes in terms of safety. The fourth component is investigation of accidents and other events, which can be realized when organizational stakeholders are committed to determining the causal factors of the lack of safety. Other components of safety management include sharing safety lessons learned and best practices safety, documentation of all the safety management system processes, conducting reviews or audits of SMS processes, and ensuring additional safety management system requirements are followed.
