New Technologies in Aviation


            Due to the high rate of globalization in the modern world, the demand for air travel is increasing by the days. Air travel is one of the most convenient means of transporting products that are highly valuable or perishable due to its speed. The convenience associated with the mode of transport has led to its increased demand.  With the increased demand of air travel, it is necessary for the aviation industry to change so as to maximize its potential. The aviation industry can only be profitable if the cost of doing business does not exceed the benefits. The industry is only profitable if it can utilize its resources to the maximum.  One of the factors that may aid the industry in maximizing the utilization of its resources is adoption of new technologies in the industry. With the adoption of technologies, the efficiency in the industry is likely to be enhanced, making it profitable for the companies and their shareholders. This paper reviews the literature by different scholars on the need to embrace new technologies in the aviation industry and the importance of the technologies to the overall performance of the sector.

Literature review

            Among the benefits that the aviation industry is reaps from embracing new technologies include low consumption of fuel and increased speed, making the mode of transport even more convenient.   Atag (2016) cites that one of the main challenges in the aviation industry is the need to refuel airplanes, especially if they are required to cover long distances. The weight and space used for storing fuel may lead to underutilization of the airplane. With the new technologies in air travel, it is possible for such space to be reduced by using fuel saving technologies.   The adoption of new technologies in the sector has the ability to reduce the cost of airplanes through using recycled materials in the manufacture of airplanes (Filatyev et al., 2014).  Guo, Dunwen & Guoxing (2011) also support the fact that the manufacture of airplanes can enhance efficiency in operations. Their focus is mainly on design which they argue that it has the potential to increase the airplane’s speed.  Hugill (2015), who argues that designing the aircrafts in the right model enhances their navigation, also cites the importance of speed in aviation technologies.

             Apart from the need to enhance speed in the aviation sector, there is a rising need to enhance security (Nakamura, Kajikawa & Suzuki, 2012). Although the means of transport is claimed to be the safest, the increased risks of terrorism and other forms of crime is a major threat to success in the sector (Sharma et al., 2009)The risk of failed system is also significant. To avert the security risk, the aviation industry needs to adopt technologies that detect dangers (Kharchenko & Alexeiev, 2010). The issue of security in the sector has gained the attention of the government and measures are in place to implement dynamic technologies with respect to enhancing security (United States, 2012). With the change the design of aircrafts in the modern days, there is an increased need to a-have a section for the medical services, whose demand in the planes has increased (Milburn et al., 2009). The United States government has shown its commitment in promoting the adoption of new technologies in the sector. According to the National Research Council (U.S.) (2013), the nation is in the process of designing better naval vehicles and planes.
