Healthy Eating

Healthy eating refers to the intake of a range of foods from the main food groups, that is, carbohydrates, proteins, and vitamins in order to achieve and maintain good health. Eating healthy foods along with exercising regularly cannot only lower an individual’s chances of contracting diseases but it also helps the individual to reach and maintain a healthy weight. People can adopt healthy eating habits by eating the right types of food and by eating the recommended amount of food for the person’s sex, age, and the level of daily activity. Before purchasing a food item, an individual should read the labels on the food items in order to compare the ones that are healthier and buy them instead of the less healthy foods. People should limit their intake of foods that are high in fat, sodium, sugar, and calories as they are harmful to the person’s health in the end. People should eat vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat milk, and proteins more often. They should in turn avoid or limit their intake of potato chips, cakes, French fries, ice cream and chocolates. Food is an important part of our life, so we should protect our bodies by eating healthy from the time we are young.

Effects of Fast Food on the Body

Fast foods are rich in salts, fats and calories and their excessive consumption could lead to a variety of health disorders such as obesity, heart attack, and diabetes to individuals. These foods contain high amounts of calories but they have slight or no nutritional value. Fast foods are also known as junk foods and they include foods such as burgers, sandwiches, hot-dogs, potato chips, pop corn, biscuits and muffins. In addition to increasing the amount of cholesterol in the human body, fast foods also add hazardous toxins in the human body. They may also have a negative effect on the bones, the brain, the skin, and the kidney of an individual. Foods that have high amounts of carbohydrates increase blood sugar levels and this is what triggers the onset of acne on the skin. Excess sodium intake on the other hand has been associated with osteoporosis, a condition that makes bones to become thin and fragile.

Getting junk food away from young children

Junk food has been discovered to be a vast contributing factor to the escalating rates of diabetes and other chronic illnesses. Children get up to 50% of caloric intake while at school, making the school set-up an important venue for educating them about healthy eating and promoting it. Children should be encouraged to eat healthy foods like fruits while at school. Healthy snacks are less accessible to the students in lower-income public elementary schools than they are to students in higher income schools. This leads to a situation whereby the students from lower-income schools cannot buy healthy foods at school. Every child should be given a chance to have an equal access to healthy foods while at school. New academic standards should be set that support school policies that do away with junk foods in schools and puts the health of kids first.

People should stop eating junk food for various reasons. First, it causes fatigue and general body weakness. This is because junk food lacks most of the necessary nutrients that is needed for maintaining healthy and normal functioning of body systems. This feeling of weakness can eventually become chronic and make it difficult for an individual to perform their normal daily routines. Second, junk food negatively alters the normal functioning of the brain. Unhealthy fats from junk food replace the healthy fats in the brain and this negatively interferes with the brain’s normal mechanism. Unhealthy fats in the brain can also cause an individual to develop reduced ability to learn new skills. Last, junk food increases the risk an individual suffering from heart disease since the junk foods have high saturated fats that raise the level of cholesterol in the blood. The increased level of cholesterol in the blood not only causes plaque to form but also heart disease. Junk food increases blood sugar levels and this damages the blood vessels linings leading to inflammation, which makes the harmful cholesterol to stick on the walls of arteries clogging blood flow to the heart. When these vessels are clogged enough, a person experiences a heart attack. Obesity, which is caused by constant consumption of junk food, also increases the chances of heart attack.

Fish, for example salmons, sardines and trout should be consumed often. Lean meat, which is meat that either the skin has been removed or the fat has been trimmed, should be given priority. Protein alternatives like beans and lentils are also examples of healthy foods that should be consumed by a person aiming to lead a healthy lifestyle.
