Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Longley (2007) explains that numerous definitions of GIS have been suggested. However, none of the definitions are completely agreeable. He further argues that, transporting officers, management scientists, and other decision-makers involves GIS automated inventory of geographical features and facilities. GIS was initiated in the 1960s. It has gained wide usage with the advent and growth of the internet in the late 21st century.

 GIS is important in making various, spatial decisions hence widely used by governments in survey and mapping. More so, it is essential in transportation economics. This is because it can be used in planning, managing, evaluation, and maintenance of effective transport logistics. GIS may reduce transportation costs by assisting routing and scheduling of fleet whereby, transport officers can easily locate fleet and plan effectively. GIS also provides navigational information for transporters, reducing time wastage and accidents from wrong turns (Nag & Sengupta, 2007).

GIS reduces transport costs by providing critical analysis of various transport infrastructures and their level of importance to users. This is essential infrastructure management information in modeling and forecasting of travel demands. It reduces traffic jams as governments can plan ahead. It is also important in airport and maritime management system.GIS also reduces cost through effective planning of business locations ensuring optimization of logistic (Hanson & Giuliano, 2004). 

GIS use spans among sectors of transport including roads, airport, rail and maritime. In future, GIS will be essential in the planning, and maintenance of infrastructure in areas such as traffic management (Butler, 2008). In addition, it will be useful in incident and accident response. The response team will be enabled to navigate accident scenes easily. Consequently, time wastage in traffic will be reduced significantly.
