The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

The following paper discusses Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). LLS is the largest blood cancer health organization in the world. It operates as a voluntary organization (Rainer and Cegielski 390).

The major duties of LLS are to fund research on blood cancer, providing education and services related to blood. They are dedicated to meeting their major responsibilities to the world. Their mission is to cure lymphoma, leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease and not limited to myeloma.

History of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

LLS was founded in 1949 in New York. Initially, it was known as Robert Roesler de Villiers Foundation. Rudolph and Antoinette de Villiers formed the organization. It came into existence after Rudolph and Antoinette lost their son Robert due to leukemia. The organization later changed to the Leukemia Society of America during the 1960s. Later in the year 2000, the name changed to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The name change was driven by the need for the organization to cover all types of blood cancer.  Currently, LLS has five chapters in Canada and about 64 chapters in the US.

Resources of LLS

The major source of funding for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is fundraising. There is a fundraising program by the name Team in Training (TNT) which has raised close to $1 million for patient support and research on blood cancer since it begun 20 years ago.TNT is the largest program of sports training channeled to charity. Annually, several events are carried out to fund the LLS. Such events include Rock n Roll Marathon hosted in San Diego; Nike has also sponsored such a marathon.

Also, there is a walk event conducted annually known as Light The Night Walk. According to Bridel, Markula and Denison (71), the walk takes place in USA, Canada, and Australia and both adults and children carry illuminated balloons as a way of support to the patients. The aim of the walk is to raise funds while also showing love and support to the patients with blood cancer. There is also a competition of fundraising which runs for ten weeks. The winners of the competition receive the title of LLS Man and Woman of the Year.

LLS’s Chapters always conduct a Leukemia Cup Regatta where the participants have a day or two on water while helping in raising funds for LLS. In addition, there exist the campaign known as The Dudes Hates Cancer (TDHC) in Philadelphia and Buffalo, New York.  TDHC raises fund for LLS.

Services offered by LLS to the Community

LLS has been continuously provided money for research to be carried out on blood cancers. Currently, the amount the organization has used is over $600 million. The organizational goals are to ensure there is transformational of the lives of the patients suffering from blood cancer (Leukemia & Lymphoma Society).

Also, LLS is concerned in improving the quality of patients’ lives and their families too.  To effectively meet their mission, LLS has created the Information Resources Center. The Information Resource Center provides patients, and their families support for the blood cancer patients to enjoy an extended life span. IRC has the right work force as it has specialists such as nurses, social workers, and health educators.

Users of LLS Foundation

The beneficiaries of the organization are all the patients suffering from blood cancer and their families. The families are trained and supported so as they can provide care to the patients.

LLS advocates for policies that support those with the illness of blood cancer.  The organization has had greater impacts on those patients with blood cancer. Its continuity means a lot to the well-being of the society. It is the role of each and every one in the society to continue participating in the fundraising of the organization so that the organization will have the required resources for their charity work.
