Leadership Studies Essay Paper on Assessment of Personal Values

Assessment of Personal Values

My Unique Gifts, Passion, and Circumstances

As an upcoming accountant and leader, I have unique gifts that set me apart. In the first place, I have a rare tilt towards working with numbers. I can play with numbers in various ways and come to the same answer. Mathematics has never been a problem with me, and I normally feel at home when in an accounting class. I believe that accounting is not a merely acquired knowledge, but rather a unique gift embedded in my system. My financial skills have set me apart as a unique leader. I normally use mathematics to lead. In this case, I cannot do anything before understanding the right formula to use. My leadership skills have been vital in various situations, both at home and school. I have my unique perspective, and my ideas are very different from the mainstream. I find myself different from other people because I have something that is rarely found in this generation. I am honest, optimistic, and trustworthy.

My passion is to do the right thing in my generation to ensure I live a fulfilled life. In addition, I am zealous about giving back my services to the community. I value serving the society, and I am normally happy when they smile because of being satisfied. During my tenure as a leader the Saudi Student Association, I used to enjoy serving. I also have a passion for nature, whereby I like keeping nature green. It is for the reason of the love of nature that I travel a lot. I have visited several places, such as London, Paris, Canada, Istanbul, Beirut, Egypt, Dubai, and America to explore nature.

I like facing life circumstances with boldness. I have learnt to live on the philosophy that one ought not to fear as long he or she is not the culprit of any evil situation. In this case, I normally act to my best on what I am required to do and leave the rest to God. Being with a religious background, I believe that all circumstances are in the plans of God. In this case, I normally trust God to give me wisdom to handle circumstances as they come. One strategy I employ is being calm and calculative before making a step towards the circumstances.

What I stand For

As an upcoming leader on the corporate scene, I stand for dignity and integrality in the corporate scene. I live in a world dictated by various circumstances that demands people to compromise on various standards in order to survive. However, having hailed from a religious background, I believe that man can stand for the truth in the corrupted world. I believe that integrity should define the features and behaviors of men because it is the most important way through which dignity can be restored in man. Integrity implies consistency in ethical behaviors, and this should be the norm in a society with meaningful development. As a leader, integrity is what defines my stand. I adhere to the acceptable standards in all transactions and environmental interactions. I long for the moment when all human beings will stick to their word, as well as adhere to existing standards because that is the day human dignity will be restored.

Major Values That Guide My Decisions

Values refer to principles, qualities, or standards that are considered desirable or worthwhile (Northouse, 2013). As a financial professional, I like using the right formula to solve a given issue. My decision on a given issue is based on various values, and the first one is honesty. Honesty is the virtue of being true to one’s word, and this the main value that guide my actions. I do not like acting contrary to the truth, and thus I normally ensure openness and transparency in my decision. I also value democracy when making my decision. Democracy is the practice of fairness, and it involves giving people what they disserve. I understand that any action has a cause, and this means that even the wrong person has an explanation for his or her wrongdoing. In this case, I normally give everyone a chance to explain the reason for the action.

My decision-making process is also guided by altruism as an important value. Altruism refers to the concern for others, whereby one does what is good to other people (Vendemiati, 2004). As a person with a good religious background, I have learnt that one ought to do good to others all the time. When making decisions, I normally consider the consequence of my decision to the stakeholders involved. In this case, I normally focus on what is the right thing to do, such that no one is victimized. However, I am not lenient, and this means one must account for his or her action without expecting some mercy.

I value being accountable to the details. When making decision, I normally explore all existing options before deciding whether a particular action is right or wrong. At the same time, I exercise flexibility, whereby I try to accommodate some situation that requires serious attention before making a decision.

How My Values Relate To Major Ethical Theories

My values have a connection with ethical theories. There are various ethical theories, and I will only relate to three.

Virtue Ethics Theory

This theory focuses on the character, rather than the action, which is likely to have led to the course of the action. In this case, for one to be considered ethical or living right, he or she must demonstrate character that relates to right living (Vendemiati, 2004). In this situation, he or she must be compassionate, courageous, and wise. He or she must shun from some form of vices, such as greed, selfishness, and jealousy. When I relate to my values, I find some resemblance. In the first place, I value honesty in my decision making process. In this case, when making decision, I will judge the honesty behind a given issue. Honesty in this case is a character, and thus relates to virtue ethics. At the same time, I believe in integrity. Integrity means holding to what is right without changing (Vendemiati, 2004). Such scenario implies that I have a propensity to hold on to my character without changing, and this implies the manifestation of virtue ethics. In most cases, I make my decisions based on the religious values I have been brought up in. These values call for honesty, fairness, and integrity when dealing with people. As a result, I display these values, and they are my character. In this case, I fit the virtue ethics theory.

Kantianism Theory

This theory holds that every action is motivated behind it, and thus one should be judged based on the principles behind his or her action. This implies that one acts right when he or she is motivated by the principles that require him or her to act right. When the right principles motivate someone, he or she overpowers the animalistic instincts in him and thus manages to act right.

This theory slightly relates to my values to a slight extent. In the first place, I attribute my good values to my good upbringing. My good background in religion made me understand the difference between good and bad. At the same time, I normally try to adhere to the set regulations, and this has molded me into a person of integrity. As a result, I can agree with the Kantainsm theory that my good morals and values results from my adherence to the principles that have taught me good and bad. However, this theory does not fully conform to my values. In some cases, the interpretation of good and bad varies. As a result, I cannot just do something because someone has declared it good. I have to evaluate it to ensure that it befits my standards. At the same time, one is not inclined to following all principles and rules because some rules are made with selfish motives.

Care Ethics Theory

This theory states that ethical attention ought to focus on relationship building. In this case, doing right entails maintaining, strengthening, and building relationships. In this case, attention is given to individuals, as well as the relationship to which they belong. Fundamental thinking in care ethics is thus based on the relationship.

Care ethics theory applies to my case to a large extend. As stated earlier, my decision making process is also guided by altruism as an important value. Altruism is a concern for humanity, and this is my motivation. I understand that one needs people around him or her to succeed. My success has been attributed to being surrounded by good people whom I maintained relationships with.

What Has Led Me to Identify With These Values

I identify myself with honesty, democracy, transparency, altruism, accountability, and flexibility as my most treasured values. I identify myself with these values because I have grown in a setting that upholds good values and thus I got oriented to them after I was born and grew up practicing them. In addition, I have an inner sense of right or wrong. I can differentiate what is right from wrong. This has been natured by knowledge and wisdom acquired from my education. As a result, my conscience cannot allow me to act contrary.

Possible Ethical Challenges I Foresee In My Chosen Career

As an accountant, I foresee a number of ethical challenges in my career. Corruption is the first issue that is associated with money, and thus it is likely to come my way. I am likely to meet people with evil intention of stealing from the company. Such people may be bosses above me, and thus, I will be faced with a situation, whereby I will be forced to choose between my career and corruption. I am also likely to encounter fraud. Fraud is committed on higher levels. It could be about the company evading to pay some taxes and thus, as an accountant, I might be forced to cooperate or lose my job.

How I Will Handle Ethical Challenges

Given my values and principles, I will not cooperate with anybody requiring me to engage in fraud or corruption. I will opt to lose my job than jeopardize my values. This is because my action is based on the principles through which I have been brought. In this case, Kantianism theory will explain my action perfectly. This theory holds that every action is motivated behind it and thus one should be judged based on the principles behind his or her action. In this case, my action to refuse to cooperate will be guided by my good virtues I possess.

My perception of Leadership and My task as a Leader

Leadership, according to my understanding, is the direction. As a leader, my main role is to provide the required direction on how a given issue ought to be handled or how the organization is supposed to move forward. A leader is thus someone who followers look up to provide the required directions.

As a leader, I have a number of roles to play, and the first one is communicating. According to Northouse (2013), all activities are accomplished through effective communication provided by the leader. This means I have to lead by communicating effectively. As a leader, my role is also to make decisions. I have the ability to take advice from people, but the final decision should be upon me.

My role as a leader is also to think for the group. As a leader, my views are considered as the best, and this means I have to think through the circumstance before making a choice. I also believe that leadership is providing the required image. An organization image is seen from the leader. My role is, therefore, to ensure that my conducts portray the group or organization I am leading.

My Understanding of Leadership In Relation To Leadership Theories

I think a leader ought to interact with his or her followers in a way that builds trust and foster healthy relationships. Such association will be effective in the performance of the organization because it will foster a good working relationship. Such association can be described by transformational leadership theory. Transformational leaders seek to empower the subjects and guards on the relationships between them and employees. Such leaders are not rigid, but rather steers the followers based on the group norms (Northouse, 2013). I think a leader should seek to improve the employers rather than gaining the employers services alone.

I also believe that a leader should be distinguished by the traits he or she displays. A leader should understand that a given position requires a display of certain traits and qualities, and thus he or she must work hard to nurture those traits in him or her. This aspect can be explained using behavioral theory. Behavioral theory focuses on the character or trait of the leader rather than the gift. In this case, any person with the right state of mind has the ability to behave in accordance to the leadership docket he or she has been given (Northouse, 2013). This means a leader should behave in a way expected of him without any reservations.
