Essay Writing Help on Half a pound of ham

Half a pound of ham

This article focuses its attention on a foreigner by the name Bernadete Piassa. The said person wants to buy fresh ham, but he is afraid that his foreign accent will fail him at the counter as he orders for it just like it has failed him before. In order to avoid this shame, the author is cautious the way he orders for fresh ham even if he wishes that he would not have to order for it over the counter. In this manner, he wishes that he would just grab fresh ham from the shelf and walk away without ordering for it over the counter (Piassa Para. 2). However, if he does this, he will end up with a packed ham that is not fresh. In this respect, the author practices the way he will order for fresh ham over the counter before he gets to the salesperson at the counter. Thesis: in this essay, I agree with the author that good things in life always cost a thing be it money, confidence, sacrifice or anything else.

To start with, the author is afraid that his foreign accent will let him down at the counter. With this in mind, he masters the language to use at the counter. This is in relation to the fact that he is afraid that the salesperson at the counter will have problems with his foreign accent. This notwithstanding, the author wants to get fresh ham from the counter rather than get packed ham from the shelf. To him, packed ham is not fresh. As a result, grabbing it from the shelf rather than ordering for fresh ham over the counter will be a disgrace to him. In addition, it will prove that he is a coward even if he does not want to admit it. Based on this understanding, the author has to get fresh ham over the counter even if it costs him all his energy. For him, this is serious business because if he does not buy the fresh one, he will be a coward. On the contrary, if he buys the fresh one, it will be a trophy to him. In addition, he will enjoy a special taste and smell of victory (Piassa Para. 6).

To a great extent, I agree with the author that foreign accent or simply put fear may be a hindrance in effective communication and it may hinder foreigners from enjoying life in foreign land. For this reason, if one is to enjoy good things in life, then he/she must overcome fear. In addition, one must purpose to get the good things of life. In this case, fresh ham represents good things in life while packed ham represents unpleasant things in life that one ends up with because of fear. As it is evident from the article, the author wants to enjoy fresh ham, but to do this he has to overcome fear. If he does not overcome fear, then he will not enjoy fresh ham. On the contrary, he will end up with packed ham that is not fresh. This being the case, the author must overcome fear of embarrassment at the counter. At the same time, the author must be confident enough that he will not be embarrassed, and if he will be embarrassed, then he must overcome the fear of being embarrassed.

In conclusion, I agree with the author that if one is to succeed in life, then he/she must purpose to succeed. In addition, one must overcome fear. This will be the case to both natives and foreigners.
