Comparing and Contrasting Essay Outline

The choice and preference of where one lives varies from one person to another. One person would prefer to live in the big cities, while the other would prefer the small town live. Still, there are those who would like to live partly in both places, as in, working in the city and living in the small town. The only underlying factor in both scenarios is that people are forced by the different circumstances to live where they live (Wuthnow, 2013). One fact though is that there exist notable differences between those who live in town and those in the villages or small towns. These differences occur as a result of the environmental conditions, lifestyle and the norms of the given setting (Merkl, 2012).This paper will therefore try and discuss the differences and similarities that exist between living in the city compared with living in the small town.

One of the similarities that exist between the small town and city guys is the fact that they both have sources of revenue. They engage in various economic activities to earn their living. in particular, the village sources of income includes undertaking various jobs like farming, herding, teaching among others while in the city setting the types of economic activities carried out include driving, piloting among other high level jobs. The contrast that appears in this case is the fact that the two settings calls for different job types and source of revenue.

In terms of employment, both settings have employment opportunities but it can be seen that the town setting has a higher chance of job availability and employment. Many of the small town people leave their places to go the big cities to look for employment. This is different as in rare cases do you find the town people moving back to the small town to look for employment. This is supported by the fact that the city setting has a lot of industries that require manpower to work.

Another notable contrast between the two settings is that in terms of housing, small town people are not stressed when it comes to paying rent. This contrasts sharply with the scenario at the big cities where one has to pay for rent or pay mortgage for the houses they are living in (Inoguchi, Tōhō Bunka Kenkyūjo & Siglo, 2003 p. 71). Rent amount in the village level is significantly smaller than that of the big city setting. At the same time, despite the fact that in both setting education is enhanced, the big city setting usually employs higher standards and more institutions of higher learning than the small town level. This can be explained by the fact that in the small town level, high school and some few colleges are found. This contrasts with the big town setting where the presence of universities, affiliate universities and colleges are found.

In terms of social lives, the small town people are social owing to the fact that live in communism. Each cares for their neighbor as the population is not big.  This contrasts with the big city setting where diversity leads to individualism (Bochniarz & Cohen, 2008 P. 226). The big city has a high population density characterized by congestion and overpopulation (Uslaner, 2002 P. 90).

There exist different norms in the small towns as compared to the big cities. The small town people prefer the traditional cultural setting as compared to the town people who are more modern and outgoing (Top of Form

  2. Likewise, the environment is more prone to pollution in the city than in the small town. (Hicks, 2004 p. xxix). Despite the fact that medical care is accorded to all setting, the specialists are more concentrated in the big cities than the small towns (Green & Wolf, 2009 p. 289). There is also a lot of exposure in the big city as compared to the small town.

Living in the city can therefore be compared as well as be contrasted with living in small town. One fact clear though, is that there are a number of factors that may prompt an individual into taking a given course of action. The underlying factor common to both situations is that they triggered and aspired by the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory and the prevailing conditions that include the nature of employment, social background, and environmental conditions. despite this fact, the greatest contrast between the two setting lies in the way the environment is polluted whereby in the big city more people leads to more waste disposal thus depleting and destroying the environment. The air is also affected as a result of the as gas emissions in the big city. This is unlikely to happen in the small town where there are few industries and population. Education and medical care is another point where contrast can be seen to arise. Majority of the specialist are in the big towns having been triggered by the urge to serve many people. Majority of health institutions are also I the big cities. This therefore leads to a situation where medical staff scarcity is experienced in small towns than in big cities. The education in big towns is advanced. This is as a result of the concentration of institutions of higher learning in these areas.
