Challenges Faced by Saudi ESL Students in the US in English Writing

Background

            There exist various challenges that affect most Arabic students when they join schools and ESL institutes in the United States mostly for their undergraduate programs (Al-Mahrooqi,& Denman, 2014). Some of these challenges include cultural, political, educational and linguistic issues among others. For example, linguistic issue is a major challenge that affects most undergraduate Saudi Arabia students. As such, these students have trouble when writing English considering the fact that it is a second language for most of them.

Statement of Purpose

            The main objective of this proposal is to look at the main linguistic challenge faced by Saudi Arabia ESL undergraduate students in the universities when writing English in the United States. Additionally, the research would also aim in providing solutions to this challenge faced by Saudi undergraduate students in America.

Quantitative purpose statement: The purpose of this study is to describe the linguistic challenge faced by four year program Saudi Arabia ESL undergraduate students when writing English in America.

Qualitative purpose statement: The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the reasons why writing English is a major challenge for ESL Saudi undergraduate students in America.  

Research Questions

As such, it is important to look at some research questions aim at addressing this issue, which includes:

1. Why is writing English a major challenge facing ESL Saudi undergraduate students in the United States?

  • What are some of the solutions that students can apply and use to address this linguistic issue?

In addition to this, the research will involve the use of books, journal articles, news articles and websites to collect the relevant information to carry out this research.

NB: 1.Quantitative has a period. In this case, the four year program needed to complete a course.

2. Qualitative is basically exploring and trying to understand the Linguistic challenge in general faced by the undergraduate students.
