Curriculum Definition

Curriculum refers to the a set of meaningful learning experiences, including the co-curricular activities, which define a particular program of studies and that are meant to improve the education of learners and enhance a common culture. The curriculum aids the learners to develop a sound mind and character, while taking care of their varied backgrounds from all sections of the country. The curriculum is  organized in a way that it expands the learning arena, where previous classroom-bound learning material is extended to capture schoolwide, communitywide, nationwide and even worldwide education. The curriculum has been decentralized to the state and the local levels, but has enhanced partnerships between the players (teachers, administrators, parents, universities and other community members), while increasing their individual powers.

The curriculum is set to guide the learning procedures, teaching methods, evaluation and assessment techniques, where all learners are supposed to be subjected to procedures that do not discriminate or favor some students. In the No Child Left Behind Act, the curriculum is set in a manner that the learners are taught and assessed on a fairground, which is meant to bridge the gap between the fast and low achievers. The curriculum is set to bring equity in all learners of color and white learners, deprived and rich, and gifted and the low achievers in academics. Therefore, curriculum defines and outlines what should be offered in all courses in the learning institution, and which must be adhered to, in order to present a level ground for all learners taking the subjects. It is often developed to meet the needs of learners and positively play a part in determining the reforms necessary to improve the success of education.
