Safety of Correctional Officers

Based on the case, the correctional officer is weary and frustrated due to some low moments in his life, including not working overtime in the current week and the sickness of his child. At this situation, the correctional officer is faced with probable issues relating to his safety. One of the possible issues is an assault on the officer. At his condition, the correctional officer is unable to maintain constant concentration and thus, he may fall asleep. This situation creates a danger of assault from the inmates. Being in the cellblock, the inmates can monitor his movements and may decide to assault him (Clear, Reisig & Cole, 2012). Lack of concentration on the part of the officer would also allow inmate-to-inmate attacks and violence. In most correctional facilities, there are reported cases of inmate violence that even leads to death of some inmates. Thus, inmate attacks and violence would lead to probable issue in the correctional facilities.

Moreover, the case of weary of correctional officer would reduce the commitment of the inmates in promoting safety. The correctional officers are expected to be strong and focused on maintaining the security and safety of the inmates. I would recommend for proper inmate classification in order to limit issues associated with mental health problems in the society. Inmates with mental health problems would easily attack the correctional officers in the cell blocks (McMains & Mullins, 2010). Therefore, the possible issues should be well maintained to enhance the safety of correctional officers.

One of solutions available is improving the classification and staffing in the prisons by providing additional incentives to the officers. The officers play a significant role in maintaining safety in the prisons. In our case, the officer seems weary due to the lack of extra pay from overtime. Improved staffing, training, and staffing would improve the commitment of the officers in the correctional facilities. The training and resources offers practical approaches in dealing with the prevalent problems in the correctional facilities. As a result, the improved staffing and classification of the officers would enhance their commitment and focus promoting safety in the correctional facility.

Second, close and regular supervision is another approach that would be used to enhance the safety of the correctional officers. The correctional facilities should have an adequate number of supervisors for the correctional staffs. This helps in avoiding misconduct while on duty. Such situation are required when the correctional officers are undergoing difficulty situations in their lives. In addition, crowded correctional facilities require proper supervision of the correctional facilities (McMains & Mullins, 2010). As a result, proper supervision would monitor the actions and behaviors of the correctional officer to avoid any actions that would alter the safety of the officers.

In addition, it would also be important to conduct regular searches in the prisons to enhance safety of the correctional officers. The searches are one of the appropriate ways of promoting safety of both the inmates and the correctional officers. The searches are conducted to confiscate any jail made weapons and contrabands. Such weapons would be used in the assaults towards the correctional officer weary on duty. Security counts and checks is another suitable approach of promoting the safety of the correctional officers. In most occasions, the security checks and counts helps to determine the number of the inmates to avoid any  escapes and surprise  attacks on the correctional officers.
