Book Review: Multinational Enterprise and World Competition by Jeremy Clegg
The book, Multinational Enterprise and World Competition is based on the author’s, Jeremy Clegg, doctoral thesis that earned him the best Dissertation Award of the Academy of International Business I 1985. The book is a logical extension and an important amplification of eclectic theory of global production by John Dunning’s.
The book focuses on a wide range of determinants of inward and outwards international business activities including foreign production, licensing arrangements, direct foreign production and exports in five major industrialized countries Sweden, West Germany, Japan, UK and the USA from 1965 to 1975.
The analysis is based on the increasing globalization of business activities and 0ffer a perspective on the changing patterns of comparative and competitive advantages in the five countries. The basic unit of the study documents the effect of country specific issues on its involvement in global trade, licensing transactions, inward and outward direct investment. One finding is however common in a study that was carried out in the five states and is innovative efforts that has continued to ensure positive effect in the state’s exports.
Innovative effort is significant in the five powerful and highly industrialized states where the study was carried out. The finding was depicted based on the intensity of the research and it has a major impact on exports of Sweden, USA, UK, Japan and West Germany. The other factors are based on individual states and their involvement in global business.
